One of the most unique things about learning Spanish is undoubtedly the double question marks ¿?.
As a beginner, I always wondered: “Why on earth do we need to put a ¿ at the beginning and a ? at the end?” It felt like extra work for no reason!
But then I realized that without this pair of punctuation marks, it’s almost impossible to tell a statement apart from a question in Spanish.
Take this classic comparison:
- Hablas español. (You speak Spanish. — A statement)
- ¿Hablas español? (Do you speak Spanish? — A question)
See the problem? The words are exactly the same. Without that opening ¿, you’d be halfway through a sentence before realizing you’re supposed to be asking a question, and you’d have to awkwardly restart your tone!
According to the records, the purpose of this unique punctuation is to give the reader an “intonation heads-up.” Since Spanish word order is so flexible, the upside-down question mark acts like a road sign, telling your brain: “Adjust your pitch now—a question is coming!”
